Valdoie: heating and cooling a nursing home with heat from underground

In a nursing home, residents’ comfort matters all year round. In Valdoie, the Résidence Les Rubans is heated and cooled by a single installation, drilled by Arverne.

SOLUTION

Drilling & Construction – shallow geothermal energy

WHAT THIS PROJECT DELIVERS

Context

The Les Rubans nursing home was inaugurated on 18 June 2025, after around two years of construction. It replaces the La Rosemontoise residence. Geothermal energy was built into the project from the design stage. It provides heating and cooling for the building, alongside rooftop solar panels, external insulation and heat-recovery ventilation. The project received support from ADEME (the French Agency for Ecological Transition), among others.

Key challenges

  • Drilling during the construction of a new building, on a site with 34 work packages, in coordination with the project management team and the engineering consultancy.
  • Drilling through two layers of ground: sandstone, then schist.
  • Keeping the installation invisible from the site.

Our work

Arverne carried out the drilling. The ground in Valdoie called for two successive techniques. In the first 18 metres, the sandstone layer requires the casing to be installed as drilling progresses. A more conventional drilling method then takes over in the schist, down to a depth of 190 m.

  • 26 vertical geothermal probes drilled to 190 m.
  • Coordination with the architect and the engineering consultancy.
  • Works delivered on schedule, according to the project owner.

Results

  • Almost 20 km of pipes laid beneath the site, supplying both heating and cooling to the nursing home.
  • An installation that is invisible from the site.
  • Your residents’ comfort, winter and summer alike.

How it works

Each probe is a closed loop of pipes. Water flows down, absorbs energy from the ground, then returns to two heat pumps. These produce the heating or cooling the building needs, depending on the outdoor temperature.

Your residents’ comfort, winter and summer alike.

A word from Arverne

“The geological composition of the ground led us to carry out a first stage of simultaneous drilling and casing, known as ‘drilling with casing’, to get through the 18-metre layer of sandstone

Then a more conventional rotary drilling method progresses through the schist down to the lowest point of –190 metres.”
