Paris-Charles de Gaulle: Terminal 1 heated by local energy

Beneath the runways of Europe’s second-largest airport, a deep doublet draws water at 71 °C from a depth of 1,810 m to supply Terminal 1 with low-carbon heat, continuously.

Context

France's largest airport, Paris-Charles de Gaulle has begun decarbonizing its infrastructure. For Terminal 1, Groupe ADP chose to tap the natural heat of the Dogger aquifer, which lies beneath the entire Île-de-France region. Arverne carried out the drilling, which was completed in February 2025 within the planned three-month schedule.

Key challenges

  • Replacing a major share of the terminal's fossil-fuel heating with renewable energy.
  • Ensuring a continuously available heat supply, without disturbance once in operation.
  • Drilling deep wells at the heart of a fully operational airport.

Our work

A geothermal doublet, made up of one production well and one injection well, draws water from the aquifer and returns it once its heat has been extracted.

  • Two wells drilled to 1,810 m in the Dogger aquifer.
  • Water extracted at 71 °C and reinjected at 45 °C, 1,600 m from the extraction point.
  • A three-month worksite involving nearly 75 people.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

“Installing geothermal energy at Paris-Charles de Gaulle will give us access to a renewable, non-polluting energy source. It is also a cost-effective energy that causes little disturbance during operation.

The benefits don't stop there! The energy produced will be available all year round, independent of weather conditions, and its supply will be guaranteed and controlled."
